PEDAL ON PARLIAMENT

Pedal on Parliament is a fun event on the afternoon of Saturday 28 April – to get as many cyclists (of all ages and abilities) to cycle to the Scottish Parliament to show how much cycling and cycle safety matters.

There are lots and lots of cyclists at Bruntsfield and it would be great if many of us could join in. The plan is to gather on the Meadows (to the east of Middle Meadow walk) at 2pm, departing for Parliament at 3pm. For those near Harrison Park, Sara Dorman (a P1 mum), will be leading a group of families to the Meadows with the help of volunteer marshals – leaving at 1.30pm, to arrive at the Meadows at 2pm.

Although we’re making a serious point about making cycling safer and easier, the day itself will be light-hearted, with a picnic at the end. The pace will be slow and easy for people to keep up – however little their legs may be. It will be non-confrontational and we’ve got the full co-operation and permission of the police and the council and all the relevant authorities. We’ll do our best to make sure that the good folk of Edinburgh can go about their normal Saturday business (although we’d be delighted if they chose to join us instead) so we won’t be blocking roads or holding anyone up any more than we have to be safe.

The deadline for submissions to the New School public consultation exercise (30th March) has now passed.

In response to our request for copies of submissions sent to Children & Families, the PC received a total of 57 parental submissions – from a mix of parents of children at the feeder primaries as well as at BHS.

You can read a collation of the parental submissions received by the PC here (PDF document – Adobe Reader required). NB A copy of this document is also being forwarded to the feeder primary PCs.

In addition to accessing parents’ written submissions, BHS PC members also attended all four public meetings and noted the issues raised at each. The written and verbal contributions from all sources were then used to inform the Parent Council’s own submission to the consultation exercise.

You can read the PC’s submission here (PDF document – Adobe Reader required).

As you can see, there is a rich and thoughtful range of contributions with many people clearly having gone to some considerable effort in detailing their comments. Whatever the outcome, the significant response can only be to the benefit of the exercise as a whole. Our grateful thanks go to everyone who contributed.

Hello everyone.

Most of you probably know we have been using an additional site at Morningside United (MU) to run various clubs. This term it’s been Badminton. Next term it’s going to be Fencing. In the Autumn we will be moving across various other clubs (the exact set is as yet undecided) because the number of rooms available to us in the school is being reduced by the fact we have another 3-class P1 intake coming through.

Of course, it’s great news that the school is thriving, but it does mean that we need to make sure that we continue to maintain our clubs – indeed we need more clubs rather than less, and this means the Morningside United site will be with us for some time to come.

The reason I am sending out this post is that the new site has a number of administration processes required for its safe functioning that don’t relate to a specific Club, and therefore don’t make sense to add to the work of a Club Coordinator. Up until now I have set these up and administered them, but I would very much like to hand this over to someone, starting in the Summer term, so that they can be fully in control of the situation for the Autumn term.

On the MU site we pay various people to act as a doorkeeper and to take children backwards and fowards to Kidzcare at the start and end of their sessions. This isn’t a Parent, but we need a Parent to make sure that there is someone available to do this job, to tell them what they are supposed to be doing and to make sure they do actually turn up. Also to liase with the Morningside United site and deal with any odd issues that turn up – like lost property, or putting lines on the floor of the hall, or whatever.

It requires someone who is typically around Bruntsfield of an afternoon, they don’t have to be on the MU site very much, just to be available either on the phone or in person. I suspect they will have to go through the process of ‘disclosure’ but we will get clarity on that in due course. My problem with doing this is that I work full time, so if I pop up to Bruntsfield I have to take time off work (or go back to work late into the evening).

Yvonne and her team have has done an amazing job in sustaining and growing the Clubs – more than 500 places in our after-school clubs are filled every week. We will have to move some clubs out of the school – there is nothing we can do about this, and we need someone to help make it happen.

If you are interested, please respond to this email.

Thanks,

Mike

Following the public consultation meeting on 14th March and further discussion on Wednesday at the Parent Council meeting, the response below has been submitted today to City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) from Bruntsfield Parent Council.

The response does not seek to favour either option, or to assess whether there is a majority view in favour of either option amongst the wider parent body. Instead it focuses on what those of us at the meeting on Wednesday felt have emerged as the key concerns about each option during the consultation process.

The deadline for individual responses to CEC is close of business tonight, so if you haven’t yet submitted a response but would like to, there’s still time. You can do this by e-mailing: cf.propertyreview@edinburgh.gov.uk

The next step is the publication of a consultation report three weeks before the Full Council meeting which will make a decision on the options. This meeting is expected to take place on 28th June. CEC indicate that all comments received, either in writing or raised at the public meetings, will be recorded and represented in the final consultation report, along with the Council’s response to those comments. We will let you know as soon as the consultation report is published.

*******************************************************

LETTER OF RESPONSE TO CONSULTATION:

30 March, 2012

Dear Mr MacIntyre

Statutory consultation response: Proposals for the location of Boroughmuir High School

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the above proposals. Bruntsfield Parent Council offers the following points for consideration in the Council’s decision-making process.

General comments

Bruntsfield Parent Council welcomes the fact that a public meeting was held at Bruntsfield Primary as part of the consultation process. The large attendance at this meeting reflects the interest that parents at Bruntsfield Primary take in this matter.

A range of views have been expressed, both at the public meeting and in copies of consultation responses which parents have been kind enough to share with us. These have informed our response.

We note City of Edinburgh Council’s preferred option of the new build on the Fountainbridge site. Since no poll was taken of parents’ views at Bruntsfield Primary, we do not express a preference as a Parent Council for either option but rather seek to reflect the key concerns which have arisen amongst parents about each option.

Option A: A new building on the Fountainbridge site

The key concerns of Bruntsfield parents should this option be chosen are:

The small area of land available for the new build relative to Scottish Government requirements

It is clear that the amount of space being allowed for a new build school on the Fountainbridge site is a major concern for parents at Bruntsfield. Many find it hard to comprehend how the Council can own the whole site at Fountainbridge, yet be proposing to use only a small part of it for the school. There can be few things more important than our children’s education: offering a site which is very constrained in terms of area is therefore hard to comprehend.

The lack of on-site sports facilities

A second notable concern relates to the lack of on-site outdoor sporting facilities proposed. Parents feel strongly that for the benefits of their health and education, and to reduce the time wastage and negative environmental impact associated with the constant bussing of children to and from Meadowbank and Meggetland, on-site facilities are a mandatory for our children. Whilst the roof-top pitch which has been mentioned is welcomed by some as a creative response to the space constraints, this does not detract from the importance of having additional space for sports facilities on the ground. Comments have also been made about the failure to think creatively about using other local open space such as Harrison Park in addition to space immediately around the school building.

The impact on school catchment

As a Parent Council we are concerned about the impact the catchment boundary changes may have on future intakes to Bruntsfield Primary. At present City of Edinburgh Council point out, correctly, that only two additional streets are to be included in our catchment. However this does not take account of housing which we understand may be planned for the part of the site nearest Edinburgh Quay, or indeed for the housing that the Council indicates is likely to be built on the existing Viewforth Boroughmuir site after relocation. Bruntsfield Primary is already heavily oversubscribed – 99 in-catchment applications for P1 for the 2012/13 session. What plans does City of Edinburgh Council have to ensure that Bruntsfield Primary does not become repeatedly over-subscribed in years to come with in-catchment pupils at P1 entry?

Option B: Refurbishment and extension of the existing building

The key point made by parents in relation to this option is:

Burdiehouse is not a tenable decant option

Expecting pupils to travel to a decanted school at Burdiehouse is entirely unrealistic. Parents find it hard to understand how a decant site closer at hand cannot be found, and indeed why the Fountainbridge site itself cannot be used. City of Edinburgh Council argues that it plans to sell on immediately the entire site should Option B be chosen. However, in reality, with city centre land prices currently very depressed, there is a strong case for holding onto this land until land values increase, providing the additional benefit of a decant site in the close vicinity of the existing Boroughmuir.

Finally, with reference to both options, we would ask to what extent teaching and support staff outwith the Senior Management Team at Boroughmuir High School have been involved in and been given the opportunity to influence the Senior Management Team position? We feel that the Strategic Education Design Brief is lacking in many respects, and of course there was no consultation with the Parent Councils during its preparation. It will therefore be important whichever option is chosen to engage meaningfully over the detailed design of the building with the staff who will be using the building, and with the Cluster Parent Councils (particularly those of the feeder primaries) to ensure it meets their needs and aspirations for delivering Curriculum for Excellence (and any successor curricula) over years to come.

We trust you will take the above points into consideration when making decisions about the future location of the ‘new Boroughmuir’.

Yours sincerely

Antonis Giannopoulos Cathy Higginson

Chair, Bruntsfield Parent Council Bruntsfield PC representative on BHS PC New School Sub-Group

As you may be aware, on behalf of Bank of Scotland, I was delighted to be able to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Torches into the school for a school assembly on Friday 9th March. All the photos from the morning can be seen by following this link:http://www.bruntsfield.org/wordpress/?page_id=5596

A professional photographer was present and we tried to ensure that as many of the children as possible had their photo taken with the Torch. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, there were a small number of children who were not photographed with the Torch but most children in the school did have the chance to touch or hold one of the Torches.

As you may have read in the press, the route for the Olympic Torch Relay was announced on Monday 19th March and the exciting news is that it will be passing very close to Bruntsfield Primary School. It will be going down Bruntsfield Place, heading to Tollcross, sometime between 6pm at 7.30pm on Wednesday 13th June (timings will confirmed nearer the time). Please make sure you put this date in your diary now and hopefully you and your family will be there to cheer on the Torchbearers and the Olympic Flame as it makes it journey to the evening celebration at Edinburgh Castle.

If you would like to find out more about the Olympic Torch Relay please follow this link:

Thanks

P7 head off to Benmore next week, 26 March. They are leaving Edinburgh around 9.00am so Mrs Ramsay suggests that everyone can start arriving and going to the lower hall from the back of 8.00am on Monday morning.

On return journey, they hope to leave Benmore early on the Friday so the bus will be back 1.00pm at the latest. Mrs Ramsay will phone the school as they leave the centre. . Any changes to the schedule we will try and get a message to you via this site.

The Green booklet ‘ Benmore Centre’ previously given out to both classes, along with the school letter, gives more information such as centre facilities and contact numbers. Here is a reminder of the ‘kit list’ for those that may have misplaced the booklet.

Link here to view the Clothing List

clothes-list1

And just as important if you need to get a message to your child during the week, you should speak to the school office in the first instance as they have mobile numbers for the staff accompanying the trip.

… weather forecast is quite good though mixed, so sunscreen and woollen jumpers

Believe it or not but it’s already time to think about our annual Bruntsfield Primary School Summer Fete!

This fun filled extravaganza desperately needs a couple of eager volunteers to co-ordinate the event. Co-ordinators will be required to organise the event as a whole, co-ordinating individual stall holders and support crew and generally making sure the whole thing happens.

Franck and Jeanna have done it for the last 3 years and will be happy to hand over information and support in any way necessary.

We are provisionally looking at a date of 9th June.

As well as being a great day out for friends and family the summer fete is by far the biggest and most successful fundraising event the Parent Forum organises. All events are organised by parent volunteers and all the money goes to improving the school for the children.

If you would like to take on this exciting challenge please get in touch asap with me, Anna Wyatt, at : events@bruntsfield.org
